Entertainment Operations
Entertainment Operations, lead by the Cruise Director, is made up of multiple departments – Adult & Family Programming, Youth Activities, Port Adventures & Recreation, Technicians, the Cast, and Musicians. This team is responsible for the delivery of seamless and flawless Guest and Crew entertainment experiences.
While the Entertainment Operations team includes over approximately 55+ different positions, below are the common Crew roles Disney Cruise Line externally recruits for within the Entertainment department.
Adult & Family Programming
Cruise Staff
This position is a part of the “Cruise Staff” team, catering to an adult and/or family audience. Acts as assistant emcee while supporting the Entertainment Activities Manager, Club Host and/or Entertainment Hosts. Ensures set-up and clean-up of all adult/family activities. Participates in day/evening deck parties, games shows, trivia contests, sports challenges, ship/island tours, bingo, etc. Assists with the Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. Helps with island rentals and activities on Castaway Cay. Seeks out guest contact and displays enthusiasm and boundless amounts of energy. This role has high guest interaction and involves some microphone use and onstage activity. Consideration for this role does require an audition.
Cruise Staff/DJ:
This position is a part of the “Cruise Staff” team, catering to an adult and/or family audience. Acts as in-house DJ orchestrating an inviting and energetic atmosphere for onboard/island events and venues. Performs Cruise Staff duties when not acting as in-house DJ. Acts as assistant emcee while supporting the Club Host, Entertainment Hosts and/or a Specialty Guest DJ. Assists with the Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. Helps with island rentals and activities on Castaway Cay. Seeks out guest contact and displays enthusiasm and boundless amounts of energy. This role has high guest interaction and involves some microphone use and onstage activity. Consideration for this role does require an audition.
Entertainment Host:
This position is a part of the “Cruise Staff” team and acts as emcee for all adult/family activities. Learns and performs scripted material and choreography. Participates in day/evening deck parties, games shows, trivia contests, sports challenges, ship/island tours, bingo, etc. Introduces specialty acts and Specialty Guest DJ. Assists with the Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. Helps with island rentals and activities on Castaway Cay. Seeks out guest contact and displays enthusiasm and boundless amounts of energy. This role has high guest interaction and involves ongoing microphone use and regular onstage activity. This role is typically promoted from the Cruise Staff role. Consideration for this role does require an audition.
Guest Communications Coordinator:
Creates and prints all onboard media— the Personal Navigator (the Disney Cruise Line daily newsletter detailing all there is to see and do), dining tickets, Port Adventures literature, onboard specials flyers, etc. Responsible for layout, proofreading, printing and folding. Partners with Engineering to maintain print shop equipment. Manages text programming of digital media plasma screens throughout guest venues. This role has low guest interaction.
Youth Activities
Youth Counselor:
Interacts with and supervises children by providing a safe and entertaining environment. Provides set-up, clean-up and program support to Youth Entertainment Hosts during facilitated programs and activities occurring onboard as well as on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. Extensively cleans youth spaces throughout day. Maintains and ensures cleanliness of areas to USPH and Disney standards. Meets and greets all guests and assists with onboard registration and check in/out process. Preps food trays for children during meal or snack periods. Spontaneously entertains high volumes of children in absence of planned activities. Occasionally facilitates and presents smaller-scale activities to groups varying in size, requiring the use of a microphone. Functions as Nursery Counselor during high volume periods. Ensures secured programming policies are followed. Occasionally assists with the Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. Helps with island rentals, beach set-up/clean-up, games and activities on Castaway Cay. This role has high guest interaction.
Disney Cruise Line offers programs and activities designed to capture the interest of youth ages 3-17 years of age. New crew members work with children ages 3-12 years of age in Disney’s Oceaneer’s Club and Disney’s Oceaneer’s Lab.

Nursery Counselor:
Interacts with and supervises our youngest guests in a themed onboard daycare center by providing a safe and entertaining environment. Facilitates active and/or relaxed unstructured play time while taking care of all infant/toddler needs. Extensively cleans nursery spaces throughout day. Maintains and ensures cleanliness of nursery according to USPH and Disney standards. This role has high guest interaction.
Flounder’s Reef Nursery (Disney Magic/Disney Wonder) and It’s A Small World Nursery (Disney Dream/Disney Fantasy) offers care for infants and toddlers. Nursery Counselors work with children ages 3 months to 3 years of age.
Youth Entertainment Host:
Acts as youth host and engages children in one-of-a-kind youth activities and programs. Learns and performs scripted material and choreography. When not hosting, takes on responsibilities of a Youth Counselor by providing set-up, clean-up and program support to other Youth Entertainment Hosts and Youth Counselors during facilitated programs and activities occurring onboard as well as on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. Extensively cleans youth spaces throughout day. Maintains and ensures cleanliness of areas to USPH and Disney standards. Meets and greets all guests and assists with onboard registration and check in/out process. Preps food trays for children during meal or snack periods. Occasionally assists with the Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. Helps with island rentals, beach set-up/clean-up, games and activities on Castaway Cay. Port Adventures and Recreation
Recreation Staff (Lifeguard)-Island:
Lifeguard at multiple lifeguard stations 300 feet apart on Castaway Cay. Clean/rent equipment—bikes, snorkel masks, boats, floats. Assist with island activities. Clean and oversee beach/boat lagoon. When working onboard the ship (approximately every 30 days for 1-2 cruises at a time), monitors children/family pools and water slides/Aqua Duck as well as all onboard recreational areas while ensuring safety of all guests and enforcing rules. Monitors integrity of adult areas. Performs hosting duties within lounges and Walt Disney Theatre in evenings. Actively supports Port Adventures (shore excursion) operation. This role has high guest interaction.
Port Adventures Host/Hostess:
Actively promote, recommend, explain and book Port Adventures (shore excursions). Monitor Port Adventures operation by dispatching, escorting and participating on tours. Assist with Castaway Cay opening and closing duties and rental of recreational equipment. Assist with monitoring and operating all recreation spaces, including, but not limited to Wide World of/Goofy Sports deck, Ping Pong, Shuffle board, foosball, mini golf, and sports simulators areas; set-up supplies and equipment; replenish, clean and maintain, as needed. Entertain and conduct sport related games and activities. Assist with monitoring and operating all water-based recreation spaces, including, but not limited to opening, closing, monitoring safety and volume of Aquaduck waterslide, Mickey slide and pools, Nemo’s Reef, Aqua Lab, children and family pools and general activity around pool areas. This role has high guest interaction.
Recreation Host/Hostess (Disney Dream/Disney Fantasy only):
Monitor and operate all water-based recreation spaces, including, but not limited to opening, closing, monitoring safety and volume of Aquaduck waterslide, Mickey slide and pools, Nemo’s Reef, Aqua Lab, children and family pools and general activity around pool areas. Monitor and operate all recreation spaces, including, but not limited to Wide World of/Goofy Sports deck, Ping Pong, Shuffleboard, foosball, mini golf, and sports simulators areas. Monitor the integrity of our adult only areas. Assist with Castaway Cay opening and closing duties and rental of recreational equipment. Entertain and conduct sport related games and activities. This role has high guest interaction.
Entertainment
Entertainment Technician:
Depending upon the Technician role, provides audio, lighting, A/V support, microphone use, show control, automated systems rigging, wardrobe, props, and broadcast needs onboard and on Castaway Cay. Works with state-of-the-art gear to provide quality Disney themed Broadway productions, outdoor fireworks and stunning special effects. Various levels of Technicians exist within the Tech department.
Main Stage and Character Performers:

Musicians:
